The 9-dotted Ground Spider – Habronestes hunti
This little spider reminded me why I do what I do… It is such a beautiful specimen with extraordinary colours and patterns on its legs and abdomen. It’s called the 9-spotted ground spider, but I counted 11 spots on this beauty, with some of them boasting 12 spots. This one was about 15mm long. They hunt and ambush small insects, with one of the species being an ant-mimic spider that will mingle with the ants in their nest in the early mornings and carry off the weaker ants as prey. They are not dangerous to humans and at worst will just leave a hot red welt for a few hours.
