An icon of Fraser Island, the rusting remains of the once-majestic SS Maheno. Most of the ship has been destroyed, rusted away or lies buried in the sands of Fraser Island. She was built in 1905 and spent her life as an ocean liner and later converted to a hospital ship during WWI. This 5000 ton steel-hulled ship could carry 420 passengers. The first class passengers enjoyed amenities which included a dining room, smoking room and music room with a Bechstein grand piano. In 1935 she was towed to Japan for scrap metal when she broke loose during a cyclone, and came to rest on the shores of Fraser Island, her grave for the past 81 years.
