This is a Dolichopodidae, known as the long-legged fly. According to Wikipedia, they “are a large, cosmopolitan family of true flies with more than 7,000 described species in about 230 genera. The genus Dolichopus is the most speciose, with some 600 species.” These little guys are quite small, about 8 to 10 mm, but they make up for it with their bright metallic colours. They seem to have a specific affinity for the Hibiscus plant, which is where I found this little fella in the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens.
