Comical birds, but equally fascinating.

The ostrich has the largest eye of any land animal. Its eye measures almost 5 cm (2 in) across, or as big as a billiard ball. They have three stomachs and are the only birds with two toes. Ostriches also hold the record for the world’s largest birds, reaching up to 9 feet or 2.7m tall.

Though they cannot fly, ostriches are fleet, strong runners. They can sprint up to 70 kilometers (43 miles) an hour and run over distance at 50 kilometers (31 miles) an hour. They may use their wings as “rudders” to help them change direction while running. An ostrich’s powerful, long legs can cover 3 to 5 meters in a single stride. These legs can also be formidable weapons. Ostrich kicks can kill a human or a potential predator like a lion.

This one posed for me while we visited Oudtshoorn in South Africa.
